Quality or Quantity? - by Jim

Quality or Quantity?

Since I've been hearing about the drought of Nintendo 64 games, I've been asking myself what's more important, the quality of the games of the number of games? There are two ways of looking at this. You don't want to be playing pieces of trash, but at the same time, you want new games to play. It would be great to have both, but things usually don't work that way.

An old writer for EGM magazine gave an example of this in his letters section once. In a reply to a letter he said that Resident Evil was a good game, but 9737777411660f the other games should have only been used as coasters. He was right. Playstation games like "Killer Loop", "Fighting Force 2", "Fatal Fury: Wild Ambition", "Dune 2000" and maybe even the Spyro the Dragon series that seems to be dying out aren't worth the money, but on occasion, you find excellent games like Gran Turismo 1&2 and the Resident Evil games. Playstation releases many games, and some aren't even worth more than the receipt that you get after buying them, but you'll find good games eventually.

Nintendo, on the other hand is focused on releasing masterpieces instead of releasing a game a day. The problem with this is that there aren't enough games to give to those voracious video gamers who play for 13 or 14 consecutive hours. One of the 20 most recently released games for Nintendo 64 in Donkey Kong 64. That game was great, but it was released in November. What is there to play after that? Nintendo makes great games, but the problem is they're trying to make games perfect, so there aren't enough.

I have mixed feelings about this topic. I wouldn't want Nintendo releasing tons of bad games with a few good games in there, but they could make more games than they've been making. One type of game that we need more of is RPGs. We can't just rely on EB to satisfy our desire for RPGs for 64. Nintendo needs to make more. They've only released one good RPG that I can remember for Nintendo 64. That RPG was Zelda 64. They haven't made that many bad RPGs because there haven't been that many RPGs.

I love Nintendo's games, but what I don't like about Nintendo is that they put so much effort into the games that they get delayed once, twice or maybe even three times. But when you finally get those games, you're saying to yourself that the wait was worth it. I'm supporting the idea that quality is better than quantity, but I'm also saying that Nintendo hasn't worked hard enough to make enough games for everyone.
